Modern Times Brewery

Modern Times Beer is one of San Diego's most recognized craft brewery brands, known for its bold aesthetic, vibrant culture, and unconventional approach. When they needed an architectural partner to translate that identity into built space, they turned to Momentum Architecture.

The project involved a complete restaurant and brewery build-out, transforming a raw commercial shell into a fully operational taproom and dining destination. Every design decision was made to reinforce Modern Times' distinctive character — from the open ceiling exposing ductwork and structural elements, to the custom bar layout designed for high-volume service without sacrificing guest experience.

The space balances industrial rawness with warmth. Exposed concrete, steel, and reclaimed wood create a tactile environment that feels both intentional and lived-in. Large-format graphics and murals — hallmarks of the Modern Times brand — were integrated into the architecture from the start, not applied as an afterthought.

Careful attention was given to the flow between front-of-house and back-of-house operations. The brewing equipment is visible from the dining area, creating transparency and connecting guests to the craft. The layout accommodates large crowds during peak hours while maintaining intimate zones for smaller groups.

The result is a space that doesn't just house a brewery — it embodies one. It's a place where architecture and brand are inseparable, and where every visit feels like stepping into the world Modern Times has built.
