Carlee McGrath Senior Center

The Carlee McGrath Senior Center is a 6,000 square foot building on the St. Madeleine Sophie's Center campus in El Cajon — an organization dedicated to serving adults with developmental disabilities. This project required architecture that goes beyond function to create a space that communicates warmth, respect, and belonging.

From the earliest conversations with the client, it was clear that this building needed to feel like home, not an institution. The design prioritizes natural light, intuitive wayfinding, and a sense of openness that puts occupants at ease. Wide corridors, generous common areas, and carefully placed windows create an environment that is both calming and uplifting.

The exterior draws from the surrounding campus architecture while establishing its own identity. Warm material selections — stucco, wood accents, and natural stone — connect the building to the landscape and give it a grounded, welcoming presence. Covered outdoor spaces extend the program beyond the building envelope, providing shaded areas for activities and social gathering.

Accessibility was woven into every detail, not as an afterthought but as a fundamental design principle. The building exceeds ADA requirements, with features specifically tailored to the needs of the population it serves — from the scale of spaces to the selection of finishes and hardware.

Working on a project like this is a reminder of why architecture matters. When a building is designed with genuine care for the people who will use it, it has the power to elevate everyday life. The Carlee McGrath Senior Center does exactly that.
