Coastal Craftsman, Two Duplexes
The Linda Vista Fourplex takes a dated existing duplex and reimagines the entire site as a four-unit development organized around two separate duplex buildings. The design draws from the coastal craftsman tradition — a style that feels right at home in San Diego's beach-adjacent neighborhoods while bringing a level of detail and warmth that most multi-family projects skip entirely.
The site plan positions the two duplexes to maximize privacy between units while creating usable outdoor space for each resident. Rather than stacking four units into a single box, splitting the program across two buildings gives every unit more light, more air, and a stronger sense of individual identity. Each duplex reads as a well-crafted home, not a portion of an apartment complex.
Coastal craftsman detailing drives the exterior character — shingle and lap siding, exposed rafter tails, tapered columns, and covered entry porches give the buildings texture and scale that connects them to the neighborhood. The material palette is durable and low-maintenance, selected to weather the coastal climate gracefully while keeping long-term ownership costs in check.
Inside, the units are designed around how people actually live in San Diego. Open floor plans connect the kitchen, living, and dining areas, with large windows and sliding doors that open to private outdoor spaces. Vaulted ceilings in the upper units add volume without adding square footage, and each unit is planned with the kind of storage and functional details that make a rental feel like a home.
The Linda Vista Fourplex is breaking ground now — proof that density and character don't have to be at odds. With the right design approach, a four-unit project can enhance a neighborhood rather than diminish it.
