Transformed from Within
The Kaiser Residence began as a modest single-story home that no longer served the family living in it. Rather than start from scratch, the owners chose to reimagine what was there — keeping the bones of the original structure while adding a full second story and completely reworking the interior.
The result is a home that feels entirely new. The addition nearly doubles the living space, with the second floor housing the primary suite and a series of flexible rooms that adapt to the family's changing needs. Expansive decks wrap the upper level, creating outdoor rooms with views that the original single-story home could never have offered.
The remodel of the ground floor was equally ambitious. Walls were removed to create an open living concept centered on the kitchen, with clear sight lines to both the front entry and the backyard. New windows and doors flood the interior with natural light, transforming spaces that once felt closed and dark into rooms that breathe.
The exterior was redesigned to read as a cohesive whole — not an addition bolted onto an existing house. A unified material palette, consistent rooflines, and carefully proportioned windows ensure the home looks intentional from every angle. The goal was always to make the addition feel inevitable, as if the house had always been this way.
Indoor-outdoor living drives the design at every level. Sliding doors open the living areas to a covered patio, while the upper decks provide elevated outdoor spaces for morning coffee and evening gatherings. In San Diego, the line between inside and out should barely exist — and here, it doesn't.
